*This description represents a significant sampling of tasks performed, responsibilities and job knowledge required, however, it is not meant to be an exhaustive list.

 

Summary of Job:  Maintains security throughout the store, helps minimise losses.  Responds to emergencies and reports of crime, including apprehending suspected shoplifters.

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Maintains order in the store.  Investigates distrubances and warns violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, public lewdness, etc.  Apprehends shoplifters, investigates various loss prevention matters including shoplifting, internal theft, time card fraud, deliberate and willful damage to product or Company property and other suspicious or illegal activities.  Investigates cash shortages.  Reviews sales checks and cash register tapes.  May count cash to verify shortages.  Interviews witnesses.  Submits reports and makes recommendations for corrective measures.  May apprehend and turn over suspects to local police.
  • Conducts routine checks in and around facility to assure the safety and security of customers and store associates.  Tours building, checks doors to ensure they are properly secured and alarmed.  Looks out for damages, fire, theft, trespassing, and illegal entry.  Documents and reports all unusual occurences and findings.  Maintains a liason with local police.  May warn and/or eject undesirables or troublemakers.
  • Advises and assists store operations management on how to control shrink and other security matters and procedures.  Maintains store security files.  May train managers and store associates on how to deal with certain loss prevention issues such as what to look for, how to detect shoplifters and in the case of management, how to stop and apprehend suspected shoplifters.
  • May check parcels and other bags belonging to customers and/or associates that are brought into the facility or that are being taken out of the facility, matching paid receipts with the merchandise.  May also inspect associate lockers where there is reason to suspect possible drug and/or alcohol possession or possession of stolen merchandise or other goods.
  • May determine the need for internal or external investigative services by uncovering the facts and identifying questionable activities.  Maintains surveillances and may perform undercover assignments.  Responsible for the security cameras in the store and for monitoring the cameras to detect theft or other irregularities.  May coordinate cases through criminal prosecution and civil actions, which may necessitate appearing in court as a witness, in order to recover lost funds or merchandise, and through Human Resources for actions relating to associate issues.
  • May assist with special events or Company programs and perform other duties as requested by the Store Manager or the Loss Prevention Regional Manager.

 

Requirements

Education and Experience:  Minimum high school degree.  Preferably some college.  Two to five years working in retail setting.  Some demonstrated understanding of loss prevention techniques and store operations.  Experience in dealing with stressful situations.  Must quickly learn Company policies and procedures.  Must possess thorough understanding of the laws regarding shoplifting.

 

Knowledge Skills:  Above average interpersonal skills.  Effective reading, writing and communication skills.  Good understanding of how to deal with emergencies, safety issues and a wide range of loss prevention matters.  Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, direct, and control situations of a high stress nature.  Must know how to operate store equipment including surveillance cameras, video equipment and registers.  Computer skills and knowledge of all front-end procedures a must.

 

Physical Requirements:  Sitting/standing for extended periods; sight or peripheral vision; communications (both verbal and written); hearing (auditory); some lifting, reaching, bending and grasping; operating equipment; telephone usage; climbing.

 

Working Conditions:  Navigates throughout the store with daily exposure to all store activities.  Generally experiences limited physical discomfort, however, when performing some tasks may encounter some discomfort due to noise, dust, or temperature if working in backroom, the coolers and upstairs.  Will interact daily with customers and associates.
